‘Quality Update’ from Google is the latest
in a series of updates announced by Google this summer. A few weeks after it
was launched users had no clue about it, until a few publishers started
noticing changes in the ways results started showing up in search results.
What is the
‘Quality Update’?
When experts questioned Google about this
update, there was no confirmation or denial received from Google. Hence this
update was dubbed by experts as the ‘Phantom Update’. This was done to signify
that although some update had been done by Google, it was not known what the
update was about. Finally Google broke its silence in May this year when it
announced that the update was a change in its algorithm in terms of how quality
signals are processed.
Further Google announced that this update
was done by Google in its core search engine algorithm in order to give an
incentive to those websites that have richer and higher quality content on
their pages than other websites that do not have this type of high quality
content. The way the Quality Update functions is that it receives quality
signals from the website on the basis of which it indexes and ranks the
website. The more relevant the content is in terms of what the users are
seeking, the higher will be the chances of the website getting ranked in search
result pages.
‘Quality
Update’ is linked to Panda Update
Experts concede the fact that in a way this
update relates to the Panda Update introduced by Google in February 2011 that
aimed to target websites that had low and poor quality content. After the panda
Update websites were badly hit and their rankings had dropped. The Panda Update
ensured that websites put that content on their website which is relevant,
useful and exactly as per what users are seeking. Content was the king and
websites that had richer and latest content that could be shared with others
ranked higher in search results. In a way, the Quality update is an extension
of the Panda Update.
What is the
implication of ‘Quality Update’ for website owners?
What this means to an average website owner
is that emphasis and stress should be put on ensuring that the website is of
high quality, well designed and user friendly. Care should also be taken that
the website is mobile friendly and has a responsive design that can function on
both smart phones and tablets. Webmasters should also ensure that they keep updating
their website and sync it with recommendations and updates announced by Google
from time to time. In order to boost search engine rankings webmasters must
keeping updating the content on the website so that it appears relevant with
the times and also proves useful to the readers. One way of doing this is to
have a tab on the website that gives latest news and updates relevant to the
industry in which the webmaster is functioning. Apart from this having a blog
on the site is also a very good idea.
